Recent Observations

On our way to Drøbak to do the very first test dive with #1611! But first - some tether management....

Located at Eik Idéverksted (Oak Idea shop) a group of students will test several concepts on a 2.7 during the spring.

Have a look at the video in the headliner! It's from the dive in Barra Grande. The reefs here are algae-reefs, just about 20 meters from shore. These reefs are crucial for the peninsula of Barra Grande, without them the whole area will disappear into the ocean.

Have been too busy adventuring the last days to update the expedition, but that's what exploration is all about, can't say I'm sorry.. :) Since last time we have been in Barra Grande and done some testing; 1) Sensor testing, using the 556 YSI Multiparameter (MP), measuring salinity, pH, ORP, Oxygen, Temperature 2) Reef diving 1: The sensor testing was successful! We tested how attaching the sensor to the ROV affected the motion and stability of the ROV and whether it was possible to use the depth holding-function.</pThe MP is about 20 cm long with about 4 cm diameter. It weights aproximately 400 grams with the protection cap on (I guess 300 without). Without the pro. capsule the ROV was able to hold the depth. However it was struggling with the cap on. This cap has a metal tip in the front which made the ROV tilt forward. The cable on the MP created a drag, but this was surprisingly insignificant! 2: Deployed the ROV by the reefs of Barra Grande. This was to see how the ROV retained the stability around the reefs under challenging conditions with quite strong currents and waves. I will upload the video as soon as the Wifi allows me!:) More posts and pictures to come!

While working on my Master Thesis I will explore whether OpenROV V2.7 can be used as a low-cost tool for environmental monitoring, using monitoring of coral reefs as a use case. January 26th I will travel from Rio de Janeiro to Barra Grande to do some test dives with my #1654 and a 556MPS YSI Multimeter, Handhold device to measure salinity, oxygen, pH and ORP. (ysi.com/productsdetail.php?556MPS-21) If those sensors could be attached to the OpenROV - who would be interested? what would be the main use? what could be the potential? The reefs along the Brazilian coast are crucial for people who are living there, because these reefs serves not "only" as larder and spawning ground for fish, but also as wave breakers and hence protect their beaches. Feel free to comment, ask questions and give any input you may have!

Leaded by "Harald Hornfagre" (the very Norwegian badass OpenROV) the ROVs marched down to the pier on the tip of Tjuvholmen. The ROV-pilots: Peter Wats Mats Herding Solberg Kristian Schumacher Saulius Žemaitaitis Jakob Nilsson + Martin Meaning there were five ROVs in the water at the same time. Brynjar, Bradd, Ole, Josef and Zack will hopefully join our next expedition with their ROVs - as for now, they contributed as co-pilots (tether management is crucial!).

The two past weekends have been an adventure - for the very first time OpenROV have run a workshop in Europe, and more specifically in Norway, Oslo. It is also first time the new 2.7 version has been tested on a workshop - it is really fun to build! Participants have come all the way from Austria and Lithuania to learn how to make the 2.7 version and to connect with other OpenROVers. This expedition will show a lot of good stories and micro adventures from the workshop, and we hope to share some experience that can be useful for all of you who want to build the 2.7! Mesh provided us a fantastic little maker space with all the tools we needed - thank you!

After my sea star-expedition in Santa Cruz earlier this summer, I got really interested to find out more about the wasting sea star syndrome. Visiting Erika Bergman on her farm in Port Angeles seemed like a great excuse to bring my ROV on new adventures! It turns out Laura James, the scuba diver who runs this awesome expedition: openexplorer.com/expedition/seastarwastingsyndromesurvey, is in Seattle and wants to join us. That means; two OpenROV's and one scuba diver are getting into the water tomorrow!

Before I was ready to head off on expedition, my ROV had to pass the saltwater test. I put it in a tank of saltwater, and #751 seemed to enjoy the bath. Great! Ready for adventure!!

The expedition had some disturbing issues; recording program, dead batteries and reflection on the computer screen. But all those issues, are easy to avoid and are caused by poor planning. Lesson learned: I now have the recordning program downloaded AND will remember to SAVE the recording before closing my lap top. I will bring the battery chargers to the point where I'm exploring, not leave them in the car parked far far away. To avoid reflection... There are many possible solutions. I know people are working on the Oculus Rift glasses for the ROV. But for now, maybe I'll bring an umbrella? What I also learned on this journey is that people are curious, and if you ask they do want to help! All in all, the expedition was great! It wont be long till my ROV and I are back in the ocean:)

Yesterday was amazing! Dropped the ROV in the water next to the sea lions (!!) under the pier - my heart was pumping and I was nervous about how these huge animals would welcome my little robot..! Luckily they just looked curious at it, circled around it a couple of times and then jumped back up to sleep. I also saw a big starfish! I tried to capture this on camera, but because of the sun the pictures from the OpenROV Cockpit are quite useless. I have now downloaded TechSmith Snagit, a recording program, that records my desktop. Going back to the wharf today, and hopefully I'll get a cool video and pictures!

Arrived Santa Cruz late at night, unpacked the equipment and charged the batteries. 07.00 - Morning surf, your mind needs to be clear before great adventures! 09.30 - went to buy some weights for my ROV - planning to go deep:) 10.00 - Heading out on the pier to find a spot. I'm prepared to be surrounded by curious tourists, but thats fine! The more the merrier. It's on!

Now I've run my ROV in the test tank at OpenROV HQ for several weeks, and it seems to work perfectly. It will be exciting to see how the ROV likes the ocean! I've wanted to take my ROV and go look for starfish for a while. It's still a lot of unanswered questions related to the mysterious illness called Seastar Wasting Syndrome affecting starfish along the California coast all the way from Alaska to San Diego. http://bit.ly/1oIKZ1G

Early morning at Lake Tahoe. Woke up 5.00 this morning, went to the lake to see the sunrise and returned to a cabin full of excited people eager to do a depth test with the #666 Erika, Eric and I went out in the crew boat - quite windy, but we're waterproof. Got the #666 down to 87 meters, didn't want to push it further since we were drifting towards shallow water. Pics are coming! Also Domenik did some cool stuff with his ROV today - stay tuned:)
