OpenExplorer Initiatives

Exploration is a team sport. OpenExplorer Initiatives allow for groups to coordinate multiple expeditions around specific themes. Sometimes they’re location specific, sometimes they are related by mission. We’re launching several new initiatives every month.

It’s more than just cooperation, too. The tools for conducting science, exploring remote areas or running conservation programs have traditionally been expensive. That's all changing. New tools are allowing anyone to participate, protect and ask interesting questions.

OpenExplorer Initiatives takes that idea a step further. Partner foundations and companies help citizen scientists and explorers by providing necessary tools to take your projects and expeditions to the next level. It is not direct financial support. Instead, if your expedition meets certain requirements, it can become eligible for the tools associated with the initiative (ROVs, Drones, etc).

How to Participate

Want to take part in the initiative and have us send you the tools? You don’t need to wait for us to get started. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Start Your Expedition

Only active expeditions will be considered for the initiatives. The good news: it’s really easy to start your expedition. Even if you aren’t sure about all the details, all you need to do is begin. Also, expeditions don’t have to be big, continent-crossing adventures. Sometimes the best expeditions take place in your own neighborhood. Just begin:

2. Fulfill Initiative Requirements

The requirements for each initiative are different, and are largely dependent on the tools that we’re sending out to support them. Fulfilling the requirements gets you in the door. In order to be eligible for the tools and support, an expedition will be reviewed for scientific merit and community involvement (how active are the users in supporting and following other OpenExplorer expeditions). Check out the specific initiative for more details.

3. Submit!

Once you’ve met the initiative requirements, let us know! Submit your expedition for review using the form provided on the initiative page. It will be reviewed in a timely matter.
