Mapping Queensland Snorkeling Spots

May 1 2015
We're planning to map all of the best snorkeling spots down the coast of Queensland, Australia. This includes well-known as well hidden spots. The goal is to create a user-friendly map of snorkel spots as part of our mission to increase awareness of our sea-dwelling friends and encourage people to protect our precious oceans. Preparation Stage

Ok, folks ... We have a go plan! In two weeks time, we will be heading off to map Moreton Island in Queensland's South East. Moreton Island is a popular spot for snorkelers because of the 15 ships that were sunk near the island to create a breakwater for ships and to create an artificial reef.

We've been putting our grant money to good use with quality gear and a GoPro to bring you videos and pictures that we take along the way.

Our camping gear is on its way and our snorkel team is chomping at the bit to get going. We'll be updating our expedition notes here shortly after and also updating snorkelspots.com too if you want to visit us there.

We're all very excited to get started and snorkel our way around Moreton Island.

Good luck! I look forward to seeing the first maps! I spent a brief day in Brisbane and didn't get a chance to jump in the ocean, we can live vicariously through you!

Expedition Background

Queensland is lucky enough to be home to Australia's world famous Great Barrier Reef. But did you know, the Great Barrier Reef is just one of the many places along Queensland's coast where you can snorkel and come face-to-face with our ocean wildlife? Our plan is to embark on an expedition to map all of the famous and less well-known snorkel spots along Queensland's coast. We'll do this by talking to locals, speaking with local council's, contacting tourist boards and traveling to as many areas as we can.

Our goal is to start creating a map of Queensland's snorkel spots that is user-friendly and encourages people to snorkel and appreciate our wonderful ocean environment. We believe that if more people come to appreciate the wildlife in the ocean, they'll do more to protect these special areas.

Starting with Brisbane, we plan to work our way up the coast, mapping as many areas as possible on a Google map to share with the world. We hope you'll join us!
